Mikel H. Williams is a United States Magistrate Judge for the District of Idaho.  He graduated from the University of Idaho College of Law in 1969.  After law school, Judge Williams received a commission in the United States Army, Judge Advocate General Corps. Judge Williams served four years on active duty and another twenty years in the United States Army Reserves, and holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, Retired. Upon leaving active duty, Judge Williams returned to Boise with a position as an Assistant United States Attorney. In 1977, he left the United States Attorney’s Office and became a partner in the Boise law firm of Collins, Manly & Williams. In 1984, Judge Williams was appointed as the first full-time United States Magistrate Judge for the District of Idaho. 

Since retiring in 2008, Judge Williams served on recall status assisting the Court by conducting settlement conferences, and serving on various Court committees through September 2020.  While on recall status, Judge Williams helped establish the START Court (Success Through Assisted Recovery and Treatment) program in Boise and Pocatello to assist certain selected individuals serving the supervised release part of their sentences.  Judge Williams has participated in mediation training sponsored by the Federal Judicial Center at Tulane University and various programs within the District of Idaho.

Judge Williams is a past chairman of the Ninth Circuit Magistrate Judges Association; a past member of the Ninth Circuit Defenders Committee; past Chairman and current member of the Local Rules Committee for the United States District Court, District of Idaho; a member of the American Inns of Court, a past member of the Advocate Editorial Board of the Idaho State Bar, and a member of the steering committee of the Idaho State Bar’s Idaho Academy of Leadership for Lawyers (“IALL”). Judge Williams has received the Idaho State Bar Professionalism award and the Richard C. Fields Civility award from Concordia University School of Law.
